Chelation
Chelating Dental Mercury
Chelation is a process where a substance that binds to mercury is introduced into the body to act as a magnet to attract mercury and carry it out of the body. The human body has very little means to rid itself of mercury and it needs an aid like a chelator. Chelators come in different forms and are introduced into the body in different ways. Dr. Kent can advise you as what can be done or what health practitioner to see to assist you in this.

Finding the Best Chelator
Spirulina is one of the natural detoxifiers and chelator known to be instrumental in assisting the removal of heavy metals of the body. Like Chlorella, it is a phytonutient that comes from blue green microalgae. It has long been known that spirulina accerates detoxification and helps cleanse the body. There is evidence in scientific studies that spirulina significantly reduces kidney toxicity. During the nuclear reactor accident in Chernobyl, Russia, spirulina was used to treat children suffering from radiation sickness. It especially works well when combined with chlorella and its detoxifying characteristics. From the research that I have accumulated, there are many excellent benefits of taking spirulina.
Spirulina is considered a super food. It contains the most complete source of nutrients found in any one single food. It is a major source of calcium, iron, beta carotene and many essential vitamins. It can contain as much as 65% protein, which is more that any food including meat or fish. It is known to be a booster of the bodies’ immune system. Phycocyanin, a natural blue green protein found in spirulina, has been shown in scientific studies to increase lymphocyte activity. It is great for athletes taken before exercise because is delivers energy and improves stamina. It has shown to help reduce blood chloresterol and help regulate the natural intestinal flora that is instrumental in proper digestion.
Despite all it wonderful benefits, spirulina should not be the sole chelator for detoxing heavy metals like mercury. I have found it to be a tremendous adjunct when combining it with another chelator in the detoxing process. There will be more about combinations and chelator formulas to come in the future writings.
Detoxing Your Body of Mercury from your Silver Fillings Using DMSA
In previous posts, I have discussed using natural metal detoxers like chlorella, spirulina, kelp and garlic. In the next few posts, I will discuss man made chelators and its advantages. DMSA(Meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid ) is one such compound developed in the 1960s by the FDA for the removal (chelation) of heavy metals.
It has been discovered that DMSA is a very effective agent for the removal of, not onlyMercury from your metal fillings, but also lead that is commonly found in the public water system. The way DMSA works is that it has receptor sites that heavy metals bind to. DMSA cannot enter the cell where the heavy metal resides and has to rely on a naturally produced substance called glutathione. Glutathione resides with in the cell and pushes the heavy metal out of the cell walls. This is where DMSA can attach itself to the mercury or lead and move it out of the body to be excreted through the urine. To insure that the body produces enough glutathione to move the heavy metal out of the cell is to take a precursor called N-Acetyl Cysteine, or NAC. This product is often given with DMSA to promote effective detoxing. DMSA should be taken in cycles. For example, one would take DMSA for 3 days and then rest for 5 to 11 days. This cycling effect is done to allow the body enough time to produce the glutathione needed to move the mercury out of the cells. Practitioners experienced in chelation know what dose of DMSA to give their patients and the best cycle to use. DMSA is at times started at a 30mg dose and at other times with patients that are very sensitive to as low as 1 mg.
Blood Brain Barrier.
In order to chelate the brain, a substance called alpha-lipoic acid must be taken in conjunction with DMSA. However this substance is not to be taken until most of the mercury burden has been considerably lowered in the body. In other words, DMSA is to be taken for a few months before the alpha-lipoic is used. DMSA is known to remove small amounts of vitamins and minerals from the body and it is recommended to take a vitamin and mineral supplement. DMSA is a very effective chelator of mercury but it should be carefully given by an experienced practitioner.
Sea Weed a Detoxifier
When most of us think of seaweed, we don’t normally think of something that could be very good for our health. Seaweed or Kelp is found in abundance on the ocean floor and is part of the brown algae family. It is a very fast growing plant and gains as much as a half a meter a day. Kelp has been used for many different things including fertilizer, thickening agent, fuel source, food source for pets as well as humans. Kelp is a good supplement for helping thyroid heath due to the natural form of iodine present. There are studies that show that an increase in iodine in the diet would lower the incidence of cancer and fibrocystic disease of the breast. Kelp is a good source of trace minerals, vitamins, protein and fiber.
Most importantly, Kelp is an excellent body detoxifier. It is a good adjunct for chelating or cleansing the body of mercury, other heavy metals and chemical toxins. It is best as a detoxifier if combined with chlorella and spirulina . In doing so, one gets the benefits of all three for each works slightly different with its differing characteristics. One has to be careful which brand you buy of kelp for a few species has known to carry a trace of arsenic in its consistency.
